Wow, what a great experience! i was able to experience true worship and a closeness with God. it was a great opportunity to hear and see God at work, both in my life and in the lives of fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. my fondest memory of urbana would have to be having communion on new year’s eve with close to 25,000 (not sure if number is accurate - but definitely thousands upon thousands) other christians in the stadium filled with fellow believers from across north america and other parts of the world.

“Perspectives” Course Notes

Saturday, September 23rd, 2006

Some points from Elizabeth about when she learned from the first few sessions of the Perspectives Course:

1. The living god is a Missionary God

2. God is never a debtor; you can’t out-give God

3. Exodus 19:5: We are God’s “own possession”. We are valuable, he carries us close to him

4. Exodus 19:6: we are a “kingdom of priests”. Priests means “bridge builder”

5. Psalm 97: Foundational passage for God’s promise

6. Primary missionary perspective = worship towards God

7. The Bible is a missionary book

8. Elizabeth Barrett Browning: “Earth’s crammed with heaven, and every common bush afire with God; but only he who sees takes off his shoes — the rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.”

9. John Piper: “Mission is not the ultimate goal of the Church. Worship is. Mission exists because worship doesn’t. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man. When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever…Worship, therefore is the fuel and the goal of missions. It’s the goal of missions because in missions we simply aim to bring the nations into the white hot enjoyment of God’s glory (Ps 97:1)…But worship is the fuel of missions. Passion for God in worship preceds the offer of God in preaching…Mission begins and ends in worship.”

10. Motive for mission: Give God’s name/essence (the “I AM”) a good reputation - glory. That is worship. Rever Him; make His name sacred.
